NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Charlotte
(Monday, November 3rd)
Final Score: Detroit 101, Charlotte 83
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Richard Hamilton led a short-handed Pistons squad with 19 points as Detroit notched a 101-83 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats to cap a busy day for the franchise.
Hamilton was 9-of-18 shooting from the field with five assists and four rebounds while Rasheed Wallace netted 15 points for Detroit, which earlier in the day saw president of basketball operations Joe Dumars pull off an early- season blockbuster trade, acquiring the services of former MVP and Rookie of the Year Allen Iverson from the Nuggets.
Heading to Denver are guard Chauncey Billups, forward Antonio McDyess and reserve center Cheikh Samb. Dumars also reportedly signed Hamilton to a three- year contract extension on Monday according to a Detroit newspaper.
"On certain nights we might use three point guards with Iverson and Rodney Stuckey and some nights we may have to even put Will Bynum in," head coach Michael Curry said of the potential lineup jostling. "It's going to vary night to night."
With a depleted lineup due to the trade, several reserves saw extended minutes with Bynum and Amir Johnson chipping in with 12 points each to help keep the newly anointed Curry perfect through his first three regular-season games.
"It's tough when one of your captains (Billups) gets traded and McDyess was one of our emotional leaders -- it's a tough day for these guys," Curry said. "So for them to come out and play the way they did, we're proud of them."
Shannon Brown had a team-high 16 points while Gerald Wallace logged a double- double with 15 points and 12 boards for the Bobcats, who were coming off a 100-87 victory over the Miami Heat in their home opener on Saturday, which also gave new head coach Larry Brown his first win with the team.
Charlotte had been 0-9 under Brown including the preseason, losing to Cleveland in its season opener on Thursday.
After falling behind by 12 with about 6 1/2 minutes to play in the first half, Charlotte made a 14-5 run to close the half down only two, 45-43.
"In the second quarter we played great and the bench got us back in the game," Brown said. "In the third quarter, the first group got us back in the hole gain."
The Pistons, though, put together a 31-20 third quarter to take a 76-63 advantage into the final frame. From there Detroit used a 9-2 run with less than three minutes remaining to take a 17-point lead and coasted to victory.
