NBA Game Summary - Portland at Dallas
(Friday, November 30th)
Final Score: Dallas 91, Portland 80
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Josh Howard delivered 23 points, 14 rebounds and even a tough forearm, resulting in a bloody nose to Steve Blake, as Dallas earned a 91-80 win over the road-struggling Portland Trail Blazers.
Jason Terry tallied 17 points and Devin Harris contributed 14 points and seven assists, as the Mavericks overcame a slow night for Dirk Nowitzki to win their second in a row after a three-game skid. Nowitzki had just 11 points, tying a season-low, on 5-of-15 shooting.
"We really communicated on the defensive end for three quarters and that's something we've been working on and trying to get more consistent at and it helped our defense out tonight," Terry said.
It was another tough night on the road for the Blazers, who fell to 0-8 outside of the Rose Garden. They've also lost nine in a row at Dallas and have fallen in 14 of the last 15 overall versus the Mavericks. They beat the Mavs, 91-82. on November 10, but were no match on this night.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Blazers, who have lost three in a row and eight of nine overall.
"It's tough. We lost tonight and now we've got San Antonio, the defending champs," said Portland's Brandon Roy, who was limited to eight points on 3- of-12 shooting. "We've just got to continue to be competitive. I thought we put ourselves in somewhat of a position to win tonight, but we made some mental mistakes down the stretch when we cut it down to six."
Blake, who finished with 12 points, left the game with 5:34 left in the third quarter after fouling and receiving a forearm from Howard. The Blazers were behind 60-47 at the time, and when Blake returned with 5:59 left in the fourth, the deficit was at 12.
However, the Blazers got within 86-80 with 1:49 left after a Blake three- pointer. Harris then missed a jumper, but made amends by drawing an offensive foul with some pesky defense on Jarrett Jack near midcourt only 23 seconds later.
Harris hit two free throws with 1:13 remaining, and Terry nailed a jumper with 36 seconds left to seal Dallas' victory.
"We kind of let down and that's really something we shouldn't do," Howard said. "We got comfortable with our lead and they made some shots, but we were able to hold them off."
The Blazers led by five early, but Dallas came back with six straight points for a 16-15 edge. Portland led 19-18 after 12 minutes, but Dallas pulled away in the second. Nowitzki's layup capped a 10-2 spurt for a 38-30 lead and the margin was 44-36 at the half.
Dallas is 8-1 at home...Sergio Rodriguez had 10 points for Portland, while Brandon Bass scored 10 for the Mavericks...Terry was 4-of-7 from three-point range, and the rest of the Dallas team was 0-for-2.
