Description: Former Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui has announced his retirement.
Insight: Matsui last played for the Rays, appearing in 34 games at the big league level in 2012. He'll end his career with 175 HR, 760 RBI and a .282 batting average in 1,236 major league games. His only All-Star appearances came in 2003 and 2004 as a member of the Yankees.

8/1/2012 2:53:00 PM
Description: The Rays have granted outfielder/DH Hideki Matsui his release after designating him for assignment late last week.
Insight: Matsui managed just 14 hits in 95 at bats (.147) during his two-month tenure with Tampa Bay. Even if he does get another chance in the major leagues, the 10-year veteran won't have any fantasy value.

Cold7/4/2012 11:40:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Hideki Matsui is questionable for Wednesday's game against New York with tightness in left hamstring.
Insight: Matsui has done nothing to get fantasy owners excited since being signed by the Rays five weeks ago. He's batting just .177 with a pair of homers and a .501 OPS.

6/14/2012 12:37:00 PM
Description: If you own Tampa Bay DH Hideki Matsui, he might be worth starting on Thursday. He's 7-19 (.368) in his career against Mets lefthander Johan Santana with two homers.
Insight: Matsui is batting cleanup Thursday in the Rays' series finale. In 10 games with Tampa Bay, he is hitting .161 with two homers and five RBIs. Matsui was expected to be a fantasy nonfactor this year but he's actually been getting good playing time lately with DH Luke Scott ailing from an injured back.

6/1/2012 10:13:00 PM
Description: Rays designated hitter/outfielder Hideki Matsui went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer against the Orioles on Friday.
Insight: Matsui has hit two balls out of the park in his first three games with Tampa Bay. However, with Desmond Jennings expected to return next week, Matsui is going to be without an everyday position.

5/29/2012 10:16:00 PM
Description: Designated hitter/outfielder Hideki Matsui started, hit sixth and played left field in his first game with the Rays on Tuesday. Matsui went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Insight: While Matsui does have a flair for the dramatic -- he hit a grand slam in his first game with New York and had six RBIs in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series -- he likely isn't going to get enough playing time with the Rays to justify a roster spot in fantasy leagues.

5/20/2012 4:58:00 PM
Description: Hideki Matsui is slated to join the Rays some time later this week, possibly as soon as Friday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Matsui is hitting .111 in Triple-A Durham right now but if he's anything close to the player who hit .251 with 12 HRs and 72 RBIs last year with the Athletics, he should be a nice complement to Desmond Jennings (when he returns from injury), Matt Joyce and B.J. Upton in the Tampa Bay outfield. The 38-year-old outfielder would probably see some time at DH as well.

4/23/2012 5:34:00 PM
Description: Hideki Matsui is expected to sign a minor league deal with the Rays soon.
Insight: Matsui doesn't really play the outfield anymore so that lack of position eligibility won't help his fantasy value. He wasn't awful last year for Oakland (.251, 12 HRs, 72 RBIs) but Matsui wiill probably need Luke Scott to get hurt or go on a real cold streak if he's going to get regular playing time.

6/23/2011 10:46:00 AM
Description: Hideki Matsui is being considered by A's manager Bob Melvin to play left field when the team returns home next week. SOURCE: Susan Slusser on Twitter
Insight: This news means he will get more at-bats which could benefit him as he has been struggling this season. Matsui hasn't put up great numbers, so he should be reserved for AL-only leagues.

5/2/2011 5:39:00 PM
Description: Matsui hits his 3rd homer of the year to beat division rival Texas in Monday's only day game.
Insight: This is a big win for Oakland and hopefully it gets Matsui's bat going for them.

12/14/2010 5:39:00 PM
Description: Hideki Matsui will officially announce a one-year $4.25 million deal today. SOURCE: BUSTER OLNEY
Insight: He will be their regular DH and should provide decent numbers. However, we aren't too excited about his potential. He is playing in a weak offense, in a pitcher's park and is well past his prime as a hitter.

12/13/2010 3:44:00 PM
Description: The A's and free agent Hideki Matsui neared completion of a one-year contract on Sunday. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Expect Matsui's home runs to drop down significantly with the move to Oakland. He is only eligible for the utility position in most leagues and, because of his risk of injury, should only be considered in the late rounds of 2011 drafts.

12/6/2010 12:41:00 PM
Description: Hideki Matsui indicated he liked the Bay Area and would have no problem hitting in Oakland's home park. SOURCE: Susan Slusser via Twitter
Insight: Matsui is almost an afterthought in the free agent market and is trying to drum up some interest. Expect him to land with an AL team that misses out on a big-name bat this off-season.

11/24/2010 3:53:00 PM
Description: The Angels did not offer arbitration to DH Hideki Matsui. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Expect Matsui to be signed after most of the big names are off the free agent board, since he is a cheap alternative for teams looking for a power bat. He has limited upside with a risk of injury but could produce solid fantasy value if he lands with a team that will play him at DH consistently.

11/18/2010 7:26:00 PM
Description: The White Sox are considering signing FA DH Hideki Matsui. SOURCE: Jon Heyman via Twitter
Insight: Matsui is limited to AL teams because his knees can not handle playing the outfield. Playing in Chicago would put Matsui in a situation where he could get back to the playoffs again.

10/5/2010 9:36:00 AM
Description: Angels DH Hideki Matsui is a free agent and it is not known whether the team will look to re-sign him. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Matsui posted similar numbers to his 2009 season, when he was with the Yankees. One scary stat is his increase in strikeouts. If he signs anywhere, expect it to be an AL team that can use him at DH.

9/17/2010 8:00:00 AM
Description: Matsui went 2-for-5 with a solo home run on Thursday against the Indians.
Insight: Matsui has hits in six straight games with two homers and four RBI over that span. He now has 20 home runs and 78 RBI on the year. (RapidDraft.com)

9/17/2010 5:42:00 AM
Description: Hideki Matsui hit his 20th home run of the season last night.
Insight: He is clearly on the decline but he hasn't fallen off a cliff. He is still an option in deeper mixed leagues.

8/31/2010 8:05:00 AM
Description: Matsui went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, two walks and a run scored on Monday against Seattle.
Insight: Matsui is now batting .262 with 17 homers and 71 RBI so far this year. (SportsBuff.com)

8/26/2010 8:01:00 AM
Description: Matsui went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI, two walks and three runs scored on Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: Matsui has hits in ten straight games as he now has six doubles, two homers, 12 RBI and 11 RBI over that span. (SportsBuff.com)
