Description: Joe Smith has taken over the closer role for Los Angeles. SOURCE: Jeff Fletcher, Orange County Register
Insight: He'll pitch the ninth inning while Ernesto Frieri (0-3, 5.64 ERA) works out some of his issues. Smith (2-0, 3.06 ERA) should be owned in all leagues until further notice.

Description: Angels reliever Joe Smith picked up his fifth save of the season Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: It wasn't like Ernesto Frieri wasn't available; he pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Manager Mike Scioscia used Frieri and Smith in the reverse order Tuesday and Frieri got the save. In fact, Smith and Frieri have alternated the Angels' last four save opportunities.

Description: Angels reliever Joe Smith blew a lead in the eighth inning Friday night, but he came back and saved Saturday's game.
Insight: We really have no idea what manager Mike Scioscia plans to do with the closer role. Ernesto Frieri has allowed one hit, one run and zero walks in 5 2/3 innings and saved two games since he was removed from the ninth inning, and Smith was used in the eighth Friday but Scioscia went back to him in the ninth Saturday for his fourth save.

Description: Though Angels manager Mike Scioscia gave closer Ernesto Frieri a vote of confidence after Wednesday's blown save, he has made the switch to Joe Smith. SOURCE: Alden Gonzalez, mlb.com
Insight: Frieri allowed an abysmal five home runs and nine earned runs in 8 2/3 innings this season and Scioscia really had no choice but to make a change. Joe Smith has a 3.60 ERA, though all four of the runs he's allowed came in one appearance. He's been unscored upon in his other 10 appearances.

Description: The Indians plan on activating Joe Smith tomorrow from the 15-day disabled list. SOURCE: Tribe Insider on Twitter
Insight: Smith has been sidelined this season because of a strained abdominal muscle and it is unclear how he will perform when he returns. He should be considered a low-end AL-only option at best.
