Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey (elbow) will undergo forearm surgery on Friday to repair a torn tendon.
Insight: Cincinnati is hopeful that Bailey will be ready for the start of the 2015 season, but that is up in the air at this point. After signing a outlandish six-year, $105 million contract in February, Bailey was highly disappointing, pitching to a 9-5 record with a 3.71 ERA in 145 and 2/3 innings this year.

Insight: Bailey is dealing with a strained flexor mass tendon in his right forearm and has been out since Aug. 8. He had a PRP injection to help speed the healing process, but it didn't work as hoped. The Reds are out of playoff contention, so there's no reason to bring Bailey back.

Insight: Bailey hopes to pitch again this season. The right-hander started off poorly (5.44 ERA in first nine starts), but he's gone 6-2 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP over his last 14 starts (94 1/3 IP). Dylan Axelrod will start Saturday against Colorado.

Insight: Bailey left his last start on July 10 due to soreness in his right patellar tendon. The right-hander has gone 5-2 with a 3.26 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and a 0.54 HR/9 over his last 66 1/3 innings after going 3-3 with a 5.44 ERA, a 1.58 WHIP and a 1.58 HR/9 in his first 51 1/3.

Insight: The team is saying it's a mild strain and that Bailey's absence was merely a precaution. He should be okay for his first start of the regular season. That will probably come April 3rd against St. Louis.

Insight: The deal includes a mutual option for a seventh year which carries a $25 salary or $5 million buyout. Bailey had his best season in 2013, winning 11 games with a 3.49 ERA (3.31 FIP) and 199 strikeouts in 209 innings. He has thrown two no-hitters since September 2012.
