Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Brandon Morrow pitched into the seventh inning
and Toronto got four solo homers in a 4-1 win over Baltimore to sweep a three-
Morrow (6-3) gave up just one run on four hits with two walks and eight
strikeouts as he went 6 1/3 innings. He had to leave in the seventh after a
line drive back to the mound by Wilson Betemit hit him in his right leg.
He was helped off the field and an X-ray showed that there was no break in the
leg and the team side he has a bruised right shin.
"We were able to dodge a bullet there," said Toronto manager John Farrell.
"He does have a contusion on the outside of the right shin. But the fact that
he is starting next Wednesday, we will take every day available to us in
preparation for his next start."
Edwin Encarnacion, Colby Rasmus, Brett Lawrie and Rajai Davis each hit a solo
homer for the Blue Jays, who had lost five straight coming into the series.
"Overall it was a very clean game," said Farrell. "Brandon hit his stride in
the third inning and four swings of the bat were the difference tonight."
Jason Hammel (6-2) gave up all four homers and nine hits with two walks and
five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings for the Orioles, who have lost five
straight. Ryan Flaherty drove in the lone run while Adam Jones went 0-for-2
with a walk to see his 20-game hitting streak come to an end.
Baltimore got on the board in the second as Mark Reynolds walked, moved to
third on a Betemit single and came home on a Flaherty base hit.
Toronto, though, homered in each of the next four innings.
The first came in the second when Encarnacion led off with his 17th of the
year, and Davis followed suit with a leadoff shot to left in the third for a
Lawrie then led off the fourth with his fourth of the year and Rasmus hit a
one-out homer in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.
Carlos Villanueva relieved Morrow and retired the next two batters to leave
Betemit stranded at first.
Francisco Cordero worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Casey Janssen pitched a scoreless
ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Toronto second baseman Omar Vizquel had two hits and now has 2,850 for his
career. He is tied with Jesse Burkett for 42nd on the all-time
list...Baltimore has won five of the nine games with Toronto this
season...Morrow improved to 3-2 in 14 games against the Orioles...Hammel fell
to 4-1 in 11 career outings against the Blue Jays...Toronto has off on
Thursday before beginning a three-game set at home against Boston on
Friday...Baltimore also has off on Thursday and will start a three-game set in
Tampa on Friday.
