San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs claimed pitcher Jairo Asencio off waivers from the Cleveland Indians on Friday.
Asencio, 29, will join the Cubs' major league roster.
The right-handed pitcher was 1-1 this year with a 5.96 earned run average before being designated for assignment by the Indians on May 28.
In his career, Asencio is 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA in 27 major league relief appearances with Atlanta (2009, 2011) and Cleveland (2012).
The Cubs designated pitcher Michael Bowden for assignment to make room for Asencio. Bowden was acquired from the Red Sox on April 21 as a part of the trade that sent Marlon Byrd to Boston. Bowden has a 7.45 ERA in 10 relief appearances for Chicago this season.
