Final Score: Toronto 12, Baltimore 6
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Edwin Encarnacion's fifth career grand slam helped the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles, 12-6, in the opener of a four-game series. J.P. Arencibia added a two-run homer and four RBI for the Blue Jays, who have won three of four. Emilio Bonifacio, Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus each knocked in a run. Toronto starter Brandon Morrow (2-3) allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out five over seven-plus innings. Manny Machado hit three doubles and knocked in two runs for the Orioles, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Chris Davis all hit solo homers. Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman (0-1), making his MLB debut, gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out five over five innings. Gausman, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, went 2-4 with a 3.11 ERA in eight starts with Double-A Bowie this season.
Final Score: Detroit 7, Minnesota 6
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Prince Fielder drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins, 7-6, in the opener of a four-game series at Comerica Park. With one out in the inning and runners on first and second, Fielder hit an infield single off Jared Burton (0-2), scoring Omar Infante, who singled to begin the frame. Miguel Cabrera had a two-run home run and drove in three while Fielder drove in two runs for the Tigers, who have won three straight. Detroit starter Rick Porcello surrendered five runs on 10 hits and a walk in five frames. Joaquin Benoit (1-0) pitched a flawless eighth and Jose Valverde was perfect in the ninth to notch his fifth save. Josh Willingham had two home runs and four RBI while Joe Mauer and Brian Dozier drove in a run apiece for the Twins, who have lost nine straight games. Starter Scott Diamond gave up three runs on nine hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.
Final Score: Cleveland 12, Boston 3
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians' bats made Terry Francona's return to Fenway Park as an opposing manager a resounding success. Mark Reynolds and Drew Stubbs each had three hits with three RBI in Cleveland's 12-3 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Francona led the Red Sox to two World Series titles during his eight-year stint as the club's skipper. He was let go after Boston's late-season collapse in 2011 left them out of the playoffs, but ended his tenure with a 744-552 record. The Indians pounded out 16 hits in the opener of a four-game series. Michael Bourn and Yan Gomes knocked in two runs apiece, while Carlos Santana drew a career-high four walks and scored three times. Cleveland starter Zach McAllister (4-3) held the Red Sox to five hits. The only blemish over his five-inning outing was a three-run homer by David Ortiz. Ryan Dempster (2-5) lasted just three innings in the start for Boston. He allowed four runs on five hits and four walks.
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 5, Kansas City 4
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Joe Blanton finally cracked the win column as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim held on for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a four-game series. Blanton (1-7) avoided matching Rickey Clark's dubious mark for the worst start to a season by an Angels pitcher. The right-hander allowed just two runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings and picked up his first win of the season with the help of four home runs by his teammates. Mark Trumbo belted a two-run shot while Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Chris Iannetta all added solo blasts for the Angels, who eked out their fifth straight victory after Ernesto Frieri gave up two runs in the ninth. Ervin Santana (3-4) was denied win No. 100 by the team that traded him away during the offseason. Santana spent his first eight seasons with the Angels and was in a position to show up his former club eight years to the day he earned his first career victory. But the long ball spoiled an otherwise solid start for Santana, who served up four homers while being charged with five runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 frames.
