D-backs' Arroyo to undergo Tommy John surgery

Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Bronson Arroyo informed the media Monday that he will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Arroyo, who landed on the disabled list on June 15 with tendinitis in his right elbow, had an MRI taken last month that showed a sprained ulnar collateral ligament.

The 37-year-old appeared to be close to returning after throwing on Friday without difficulty, but a reevaluation had the right-hander change his mind and decide to undergo surgery.

The durable veteran had started at least 29 games in each of his past 10 seasons and had gone 369 starts without a DL stint. It was the second-longest active streak among pitchers, trailing only Toronto's Mark Buehrle (443).

Arroyo compiled a 7-4 record with a 4.08 ERA over 14 starts this season, his first with the Diamondbacks.

Arroyo, who broke into the majors with Pittsburgh in 2000, owns a career record of 145-131 with a 4.19 ERA across 405 games with the Pirates, Red Sox, Reds and Diamondbacks.
