Braves eye bounce back effort vs. Mets
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves will try to get back into the win column when they start a four-game series against the New York Mets Monday at Citi Field.
The Braves had a nine-game winning streak come to a close with Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game series at Turner Field.
Chris Johnson brought in the Braves' lone run with a single, while Andrelton Simmons and Tommy La Stella each supplied two hits for Atlanta.
"We weren't going to win the rest of the games," Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. "There was going to come a time (when the streak) was going to come to an end. But we still swung the bats well and our pitching was obviously great. It just didn't happen for us today."
Alex Wood was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on just three hits and three walks across seven frames.
Atlanta will send Mike Minor to the hill Monday and he is 2-5 with a 4.73 earned run average. Minor hasn't won since May 19 and is 0-3 in his last three decisions. In 10 career starts against the Mets, Minor has a 4-2 record and a 5.14 earned run average.
Minor is 1-1 in five road starts this season.
The Mets won two of three versus the Texas Rangers over the weekend to start a 10-game homestand and recorded an 8-4 victory on Sunday.
Anthony Recker hit a three-run homer during a five-run first inning for the Mets. Kirk Nieuwenhuis added a solo homer and scored three runs for the Mets, who saw starter Zack Wheeler give up one run on six hits over 6 1/3 innings.
"You want to have quick innings, limit what other teams are doing because you have a big lead," Wheeler said. "It was nice to pitch with such a big lead."
Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the call for the Mets Monday and is 3-3 with a 3.72 earned run average. Matsuzaka has lost his last three trips to the mound and is 1-3 with a 7.88 ERA in six games (4 starts) lifetime against the Braves.
The Mets will also host Miami on this homestand.
Atlanta is 6-3 against New York this season.
