Miller's HR in 9th lifts M's past Royals
Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Miller smacked a go-ahead, leadoff homer in the top of the ninth inning and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals, 7-5, in the opener of a three-game set.
Seattle had squandered a 5-0 advantage before Miller laced his go-ahead shot down the right-field line off Royals closer Greg Holland (0-2). James Jones then singled, while Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager both walked to load the bases for Logan Morrison, who lined a single to center to bring home Jones. Cano was thrown out at the plate by Jarrod Dyson on the play.
The Royals had loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Charlie Furbush (1-4) got Mike Moustakas to pop out and Alcides Escobar to strike out to end the threat.
Kansas City put two on in the bottom of the ninth against Fernando Rodney, but the Seattle closer struck out Alex Gordon to end the game and notch his 19th save of the year.
