Ross bests Scherzer, Padres take series from Tigers

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyson Ross outpitched Max Scherzer and Wil Venable hit a two-run double, as San Diego topped Detroit, 5-1, in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set.

Ross (1-2) tossed seven sterling innings, allowing a run on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Scherzer (0-1) left the game after five full frames having surrendered four runs on as many hits and three walks despite fanning a season-high 10 batters.

Jedd Gyorko and Xavier Nady each hit a solo homer for the Padres, who responded after a Saturday loss to take the series and win for the third time in their last four.

Victor Martinez drove in the lone run for the Tigers, who have lost four of six.
