Hip injury sends Blue Jays' Bautista to DL
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays placed All-Star outfielder Jose Bautista on the 15-day disabled list following Tuesday's doubleheader with the New York Yankees due to a hip injury the slugger aggravated in the first game.
Bautista was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left hip. He initially sustained the injury while sliding in Toronto's 2-1 victory over Boston on Thursday, then had his hip tighten up in the team's 8-4 loss to New York in Tuesday's opener.
The two-time home run champion exited the game after three innings.
"His hip flared up on him," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said afterward. "He felt it a couple of days ago and didn't think it was that big of a deal, so he was able to play. But standing around the outfield -- [enduring] all of those pitches -- aggravated it, so he went to go get checked out."
Bautista entered Tuesday's play tied for fifth in the American League with 28 homers and is batting .259 with 73 RBI on the season.
Toronto will announce a corresponding move prior to Wednesday's game against the Yankees.
