Vyjack fights to win Jerome Stakes

Ozone Park, NY (Sports Network) - Heavy favorite Vyjack outfought Siete de Oros down the stretch to capture Saturday's 1-mile, 70-yard Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct. The Jerome is the beginning stakes in New York on the way to the Kentucky Derby.

Vyjack, trained by Rudy Rodriguez, went off as the 6-5 favorite in the eight-horse field. The 5-2 second choice was Long River with Siete de Oros a 41-1 longshot.

Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Vyjack was racing third in the early going and continued to press pacesetter Mudflats up the backstretch. Around the final turn the three leading runners were Siete de Oros, Vyjack and Mudflats.

At the top of the stretch Siete de Oros and Vyjack had drawn away from Mudflats and the two battled to the wire. Just before the finish Vyjack, along the rail, edged past Siete de Oros to post a head victory.

Amerigo Vespucci rallied to finish third followed by Long River, Vegas No Show, Notacatbutallama, Mudflats and James Jingle.

Owned by Pick Six Racing, Vyjack covered the Jerome in 1:40.67 on a fast track.

Vyjack earned $120,000 with the win to boost his earnings to $202,200 and remain undefeated in three starts.

He broke his maiden on Nov. 10 with a 1 3/4-length victory and captured the Traskwood Stakes at Aqueduct by 5 3/4-lengths four weeks later.

Vyjack returned $4.30, $3.30 and $2.90. Siete de Oros paid $23.00 and $11.00, and Amerigo Vespucci paid $7.90 to show.
