Stealcase out of Belmont Stakes consideration
Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Stealcase, owned by John C. Oxley, will be pointed away from the Belmont Stakes and remain headquartered at Churchill Downs. Trainer Mark Casse indicated Thursday the three-year-old will make his next start on June 16.
"He's not going to run in the Belmont," Casse said. "We're going to point for the Matt Winn (at Churchill Downs). We want to get him some confidence and it looks like the Belmont is going to come up pretty tough."
The chestnut colt was third in his last start, the Derby Trial on April 28. Stealcase is a son of 2006 Arkansas Derby winner Lawyer Ron with one win in six career starts for $66,582.
In previous stakes the colt was sixth in the Gotham behind Hansen and fifth to Went the Day Well in the Spiral Stakes. His trainer has high aspirations for Stealcase.
"We're going to aim for the Travers (Saratoga on Aug. 25)," Casse said.
Oxley is no stranger to Triple Crown horses having won the 2001 Kentucky Derby with Monarchos.
