Hambletonian attracts 18 trotters
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The 86th edition of the $1.5 million Hambletonian at The Meadowlands has attracted 18 three-year-old trotters for harness racing's premier event. The mile race is the second leg of trotting's Triple Crown.
Due to the number of entries, two elimination heats will be conducted this Saturday night with the final slated for August 6. The post position draw for the Hambletonian final will be Tuesday, August 2.
The first leg of the Triple Crown, the Yonkers Trot, was won by Leader of the Gang who has not been entered in the Hambletonian.
The final leg is the Kentucky Futurity, which will be held in October at The Red Mile in Lexington. There have been nine Triple Crown winning trotters, the last being Glidemaster in 2006.
Last year's Hambletonian was won by Muscle Massive.
