Leader of the Gang takes Yonkers Trot
Yonkers, NY (Sports Network) - Morning-line favorite Leader of the Gang kicked off the 2011 trotting Triple Crown with a front running victory Saturday night in the 57th edition of the $445,474 Yonkers Trot at Yonkers Raceway.
The win gives trainer Jimmy Takter his third straight victory in the Yonkers Trot and the second in a row for driver David Miller. The pair teamed up last year with On the Tab and Takter won in 2009 with Judge Joe and driver Ron Pierce.
Leader of the Gang was the 9-5 program favorite, but went off as the 2-1 co- favorite with the entry of Pegasus Blue Chip and Live Jazz. The entry was actually a slight favorite over Leader of the Gang based on total money bet.
Starting from post two, Leader of the Gang took the lead right from the start and never relinquished it. Miller guided the colt to a head victory over 7-2 third pick Del Cielo.
Evil Urges held on for third followed by Live Jazz, Bambino Hall and Pegasus Blue Chip. Celebrity Bombay, the 21-1 longshot, failed to finish.
Leader of the Gang trotted the mile in 1:57 2/5.
The three-year-old adds $222,737 to his earnings. In 15 career starts he has six wins for $609,509.
Leader of the Gang returned $6.70, $3.70 and $2.60. Del Cielo paid $4.30 and $2.40, Evil Urges paid $2.80 to show.
The trotting Triple Crown will continue on Saturday, August 6 with the Hambletonian at The Meadowlands and the Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile on Sunday, October 2.
The last year that harness racing had a trotting Triple Crown winner was in 2006 with Glidemaster.
