Gillman edges Henderson to win Women's Am title

Glen Cove, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kristen Gillman birdied the final hole of Sunday's 36-hole match-play final to defeat Brooke Mackenzie Henderson, 2- up, and win the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

With the match all-square through 32 holes, Gillman took just her second lead of the day with a birdie at the par-5 33rd hole. After halving the next two, Gillman poured in her birdie at No. 36 to clinch the title.

Before taking the lead on No. 33, Gillman had a 1-up advantage for just one hole earlier in the round at Nassau Country Club.

Both Gillman and Henderson parred the first three holes of the match to remain all square. Henderson took her first lead of the day with a birdie at No. 4 and it remained that way until the ninth hole, where Gillman made a birdie of her own to square things up.

After halving 10 and 11, Gillman took her first 1-up lead when Henderson tripped to a bogey at No. 12. Gillman's lead was short-lived, however, as she also tripped to a bogey herself at 13, while Henderson made par.

Henderson had the momentum after 18 holes when she birdied 17 and 18 to take a 2-up lead heading into the break. Gillman would not get back to all-square for the next 14 holes.

Gillman got back to 1-down with a par at 20, but Henderson later took her biggest lead of the day with wins at 25 and 26. Just like that Henderson was 3-up. Gillman trimmed that lead to 2-up with another birdie at 27 and that was followed by two straight halved holes.

A birdie on the par-4 30th hole had Gillman right back in the match as she was 1-down, and she went on to win No. 32 with another birdie to square the match for the first time in 16 holes.

Gillman dropped her approach at the par-5 33rd hole to about two feet. While Henderson two-putted for her par, Gillman tapped in for a birdie to take the lead.

After halving the next two holes, Gillman headed to the final hole dormie. She left little doubt as Gillman drilled her approach to about two feet again. Henderson missed her seven-foot birdie try and Gillman kicked her putt in for the win.
