Defending champ Jutanugarn rolls at Girls' Junior
Daly City, CA (Sports Network) - Defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn rolled through her first match at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
Jutanugarn, a 16-year-old from Thailand, birdied the 12th and 13th holes in her match with Ji Eun Baik to wrap up a dominating 6 & 5 win on Wednesday.
The third-ranked female amateur, Jutanugarn is looking to become just the third player in history to successfully defend her title at this championship.
She was the stroke play medalist for the second straight year after shooting a 2-under 142 over 36 holes at Lake Merced Golf Club.
Top-ranked female amateur Lydia Ko of New Zealand was also an easy winner on Wednesday, beating Mikayla Harmon 7 & 6 to advance to the round of 32.
Jutanugarn drew Katelyn Dambaugh, a 1-up winner over Minjia Luo, in Thursday's second round. Match play runs through Saturday.
The only players to successfully defend their titles at the championship were Judy Eller (1957-58) and Hollis Stacy (1969-71).
