Ban, Liu, Echavarria medal at U.S. Junior

Stratham, NH (Sports Network) - Shintaro Ban, Jim Liu and Nicolas Echavarria shared medalist honors Tuesday after the second round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Ban fired a 3-under 69, while Liu and Echavarria both had 1-under 71s on Tuesday. The trio finished two rounds at 3-under 141 at The Golf Club of New England.

Andrew Bonner (72), Zecheng Dou (68) and Carter Jenkins (69) shared fourth at 2-under 142.

Branson Davis carded a 1-under 71 and finished seventh at minus-1. Tom Swanson struggled to a 1-over 73 and was eighth at even-par 144.

Beau Hossler, who contended this year at the U.S. Open at Olympic Club, posted a 71 and shared 18th at plus-4. That put him comfortably in position for the match-play portion of the tournament, reserved for the top 64 in stroke play.

"I want to make sure I don't let shots go," said the 17-year-old Hossler. "That can cost you the tournament. For me, I just like to know where I am."

Ban flew out of the gate on Tuesday with four birdies in his first seven holes. He added a birdie at the 14th, but dropped shots at 15 and 18 to cost him medalist honors on his own.

"Shooting under par is all I ever asked for," Ban said, "especially in a USGA event."

Liu also had a great front side on Tuesday. He notched five birdies, including four in a row from the fifth, but lost some momentum with a double bogey at the ninth.

Liu was also in position for solo medalist honors, but was undone by a double bogey at the 13th.

Echavarria, a 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur semifinalist, was 2-under on the opening nine after three birdies and a bogey. He bogeyed the 11th on his second side, but it was enough for a share of first place.

Douglas Ghim (72), Richard Hattori (70) and Sam Horsfield (72) tied for ninth at 1-over par.

NOTES: The first round of match play begins Wednesday, followed by the second and third rounds on Thursday. The quarterfinals and semifinals are on tap for Friday and the 36-hole final will take place Saturday...There will be a 7-man playoff for the last spot in match play on Wednesday morning.
