Defending champ Simson advances at Senior Am

Manakin-Sabot, VA (Sports Network) - Defending champion Paul Simson handled Armen Dirtadian, 5 & 3 on Monday to advance to the second round of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Simson earned medalist honors on Sunday after two rounds of stroke play and he seems poised for a long run in defense of his title. If Simson can win the championship, he would be the first player since William C. Campbell in 1979-80 to win back-to-back titles.

Simson will face Sam Trill, Jr. in Tuesday's second-round action at Kinloch Golf Club. Trill had little trouble dispatching Joe Sommers, 4 & 3 in Monday's round of 64.

Stanford Lee, the 2007 champion, birdied the first extra hole on Tuesday to pull out a 1-up win over Martin West. Lee will meet 2008 runner-up George Zahringer in the second round after Zahringer won the last three hole to defeat Casey Boyns, 2-up.

Lee isn't the only member of his family still alive in this championship. His brother Louis bested Tom Brandes, 1-up on Monday and the possibility exists the two could meet along the way. The two could face off in the quarterfinals if they both win on Tuesday.

Louis Lee will play last year's runner-up Patrick Tallent in the round of 32 after Tallent took out Jack Kearney, 2-up.

The second and third rounds are on tap for Tuesday, then the quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday. The 18-hole final will be played on Thursday.
