It took only two starts, but Fred Couples broke into the winner`s circle on the Champions Tour last year at the ACE Group Classic. After a second to Tom Watson at the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship, Couples won this tournament, but it was much closer than it had any right being. Couples had a two-shot lead heading into the final round and posted an admirable, eight-under 64. The former Masters champion only won by a single stroke. Tommy Armour III, who was making his Champions Tour debut at this event last year, fired an eye-opening, 11-under 61. He matched the tour`s record for lowest score in relation to par, but came up just one shy. Unfortunately, Couples won`t be on hand to defend his title. He`s playing in the Northern Trust Open, a tournament he won twice in the early 90s. Golf Channel will carry the action. The Champions Tour will be off until March 11 when the Toshiba Classic tees off in Newport Beach, California. Couples won that tournament last year as well.
