Sheehan, Peterson share lead in Indiana
Evansville, IN (Sports Network) - Patrick Sheehan and John Peterson shot matching 6-under 66s on Thursday to share the lead after the first round of the United Leasing Championship.
Sheehan has not finished better than a tie for 22nd at the Stadion Classic earlier this year, while Peterson has seven top-30 finishes this season.
Kevin Tway and Adam Crawford share third at 5-under, while money leader Michael Putnam is among a group of nine players tied for fifth place at Victoria National Golf Club at 4-under 68.
Sheehan was the first of the eventual co-leaders to hit the course and he opened with a par at the 10th before getting into red numbers with a birdie at the 11th.
After picking up another shot at the 13th, he poured in back-to-back birdies at the 15th and 16th to make the turn at 4-under.
He rolled in another set of birdies at the third and fourth to reach 6-under, and traded a bogey at the eighth with a birdie at the ninth to remain there.
"I drove it great, hit my irons very well and had a lot of short birdie putts," said Sheehan. "You can't attack this course from the rough. The tee shot is going to be the most important shot every hole this week."
Peterson started on the front nine and birdied the second before reeling off three straight birdies from the seventh to reach 4-under.
He briefly moved ahead of Sheehan with birdies at Nos 12, 15 and 17, but tripped to a bogey at the last to fall back into a tie for the lead.
"You've got to hit the ball in the fairway because the rough is so tangled and long," Peterson said about the course, which has seen more than six inches of rain this week. "You've got to put it where you can see it and if you can't see it in this rough you're in trouble."
Tway countered his lone bogey of the day with six birdies, while Crawford recorded seven birdies and a pair bogeys during his opening round to grab a share of second place.
NOTES: Thursday's round was played with lift, clean and place conditions in effect ... Defending champion Peter Tomasulo shot a 1-under 71 on Thursday and sits among a group of players tied for 38th place.
