Ridings goes in front at Mexico Open
Leon, Mexico (Sports Network) - Tag Ridings posted a three-under 69 on Friday to take the second-round lead of the Mexico Open at El Bosque Golf Club.
Ridings finished 36 holes at nine-under 135 and is one stroke ahead of first- round leader Ryan Armour (72), Lee Williams (67) and Chile Classic winner Paul Haley II (71).
Reigning Stadion Classic at UGA champion Hudson Swafford (69) and Jon Mills (71) are tied for fifth at minus-seven.
Ridings bogeyed the second hole on Friday, but got the stroke back with a birdie at the fourth. He struggled closing out his front nine with consecutive bogeys at eight and nine.
He was four-under for the championship, but played brilliantly on the back nine.
Ridings birdied two of his first three holes on the second side and got back to six-under par. His birdie at the par-four 14th inched him closer to the lead, but it was play late that got him in front.
Ridings made back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17 to soar into first. He stayed there despite a poor drive into a bunker at the par-five finishing hole.
"It was a tale of two cities from the front nine to the back nine," said Ridings. "There is no predicting the wind out here. It is tough. Yes, it can blow harder in the afternoon, but we had a lot of dead time out there on the back nine where it was very nice."
Casey Wittenberg (68), Matt Hendrix (70) and Justin Bolli (71) share seventh at six-under 138.
NOTES: Ridings has only one Nationwide Tour victory and that came at the 2002 Permian Basin Open...The 36-hole cut fell at one-over 145 with one player in the top 20 on the money list - Robert Streb - missing the cut...Michael Letzig withdrew on Friday.
