Hilton Head Island, SC (Sports Network) - Chad Campbell carded a four-under 67 Thursday to grab a share of the lead after the first round of the Heritage.

Campbell was joined atop the leaderboard by Vaughn Taylor and Colt Knost.

Jim Furyk played in the morning when it was much windier. He posted a three- under 68. Charlie Wi, Matt Every and Harris English joined Furyk in a share of fourth place at Harbour Town Golf Links.

John Mallinger, Chez Reavie and Blake Adams are two strokes off the lead at minus-two.

World No. 1 Luke Donald struggled to a four-over 75. If he finishes outside the top-eight, he'll lose the top spot in the ranking to Rory McIlroy, who would ascend to No. 1 despite not playing this week.

Campbell got his round going with an eight-foot birdie putt on the second. At the par-three fourth, he dropped in a 10-footer for birdie and came right back with a five-foot birdie effort on No. 5 to quickly move to minus-three.

The 37-year-old briefly moved into the lead with a 21-foot birdie putt on the seventh. He missed the green on the eighth and that led to a bogey.

Campbell atoned for that mistake with a 19-foot birdie effort on the ninth. However, he stumbled to another bogey at the 10th to slip back to minus-three.

After four straight pars, Campbell nearly holed his third for eagle as his shot stopped within a foot of the hole at the par-five 15th. He kicked that in for a birdie, then parred the final three holes.

"I haven't felt like I've been that far off, but the results haven't been good at all," stated Campbell, whose last tour win was in 2007. "I feel like I've been working on the right things and heading the right direction. I feel like I'm starting to get better."

Taylor played the back nine first and he poured in a 20-footer for birdie on the 12th to get his round going. Three holes later, he rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt.

The two-time Reno-Tahoe winner gave both of those strokes back as he faltered to a double-bogey on the 16th. He made a mess of the first to slip to plus- one, but atoned for that mistake with a birdie at the next.

Taylor then made an 11-foot birdie putt on No. 4, and holed a bunker shot for birdie on the seventh to get to two-under.

The 36-year-old holed out again to grab a share of the lead. At the par-four ninth, Taylor drained a wedge shot from 103 yards out for eagle and a share of the lead.

"That was a very fortunate finish. I hit a good shot there at the last, lucky for it to go in," said Taylor. "Really pleased to finish that way. I struggled a little on the front side and just finished strong."

Knost traded a birdie for a bogey from the second. It was all red numbers from there, though.

At the sixth, he converted a 16-footer for birdie. Knost cruised around the turn with seven straight pars before making a late climb up the leaderboard.

Knost rolled in a seven-footer for birdie on the 14th, then made birdie from 10 feet out on No. 16. At the par-four closing hole, he sank another seven- footer to gain a piece of the lead.

John Daly headlines a group of 13 players tied for 11th at minus-one.

NOTES: Defending champion Brandt Snedeker opened with an even-par 71 and is tied for 24th...Billy Mayfair had a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh...Of the 23 players who broke par in the opening round, only six of them played in the morning wave.
