Floren highlights British Open local qualifiers
East Lothian, Scotland (Sports Network) - European Tour regular Oscar Floren highlighted a group of 12 players who qualified for the British Open on Tuesday.
There were four separate qualifying events conducted over the last two days, with 288 players competing for the final 12 places at Muirfield.
Floren, whose best finish this season was a tie for 25th at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, took part in the Gullane No. 1 qualifier and finished in a share of second place with amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick at 1-under-par 141.
Amateur Ben Stow captured the top spot of the qualifier at 2-under 140.
Another amateur claimed the top spot at the Dunbar event, as Grant Forrest finished at 8-under-par 132. Shiv Kapur finished in a tie for second with John Wade, one shot back of Forrest, to also earn invitations to the British Open.
Kapur won the Challenge Tour's Gujarat Kensville Challenge event earlier this year and is currently ranked 19th on that tour's money list. He has also participated in eight European Tour events in 2013.
Steven Tiley, who has five top-25 finishes on the Challenge Tour this season, paced the field at the Musselburgh qualifier at 9-under 133 to earn his spot at the Open Championship.
Lloyd Saltman and Tyrrell Hatton each finished the two-round tournament at 6- under 136 to grab the final two spots in Musselburgh. Saltman was the leading amateur in The Open at St Andrews in 2005.
The lone playoff of the qualifiers took place at the North Berwick event, where Gareth Wright and George Murray outlasted David Higgins to capture the final two spots.
Higgins' playoff bid was derailed before it began, as he was penalized two strokes for having 15 clubs in his bag. Wright then recorded a birdie and Murray parred the extra hole to officially eliminate Higgins.
The trio finished the event at 5-under-par 137, which was a stroke behind amateur Jimmy Mullen.
Colin Montgomerie was among those who failed to secure a spot at the upcoming British Open. The World Golf Hall of Famer recently made his Champions Tour debut and finished in a tie for ninth at last week's Senior Players Championship.
