Vanegas claims first win

Rionegro, Colombia (Sports Network) - David Vanegas posted a four-under 67 on Sunday to earn his first win as a professional at the Abierto Internacional de Golf II Copa Antioquia.

Vanegas finished four rounds at 12-under 272 at Club Deportivo El Rodeo sede La Macarena and won by four strokes over Nathan Smith, who carded a two-under 69 Sunday.

Vince Covello managed a one-over 72 and took third at minus-six. Last year's winner Peter Gustafsson shot a one-under 70 and came in fourth at five-under 279.

Vanegas held the 54-hole lead and the 23-year-old, who has been a pro for almost two years, birdied his first. He dropped a shot at the third, but he put the tournament away around the turn.

Vanegas birdied eight, parred nine, then birdied three in a row from the 10th. He reached 12-under par for the championship and amassed a huge lead with six holes to play.

He bogeyed the 13th, but a birdie at the last gave him his four-stroke margin of victory.

This is the 2010 season debut for the Canadian Tour and this championship is tri-sanctioned by the Canadian Tour, the Tour de las Americas and the European Challenge Tour.

This win gives him playing privileges on all three tours.

Robert Dinwiddie had a one-under 70 on Sunday and took fifth at minus-four.

Julio Zapata (71), Mark Tullo (70) and Jan-Are Larsen (73) tied for sixth at three-under 281.

NOTES: The Canadian Tour doesn't resume action until April with two different Q Schools in between.
