Roque grabs early lead in Canada
Victoria, BC (Sports Network) - American Andrew Roque fired a six-under 64 on Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Times Colonist Island Savings Open.
Roque, a tour rookie, is making his first Canadian Tour start this week at Uplands Golf Club.
Lucas Lee is alone in second place at minus-five, while Erick Justesen is one stroke back at four-under 66.
Two-time tour winner Derek Gillespie posted a three-under 67 and is tied for fourth. He was joined there by Gordy Scutt, Oliver Tubb, Nick Taylor, Matt Marshall, Will Strickler, Jeff Burton and Paul Peterson.
Roque started his round with a birdie on the second. He came back with birdies on the fifth and eighth to make the turn at minus-three.
After six straight pars around the turn, Roque poured in three straight birdies from the 15th to grab the lead at six-under. He parred the last to maintain the lead.
Lee was in the first group out off the 10th tee. He tripped to a bogey on his first hole, but came back with a birdie on No. 11. After an eagle on the 12th, he birdied the 13th to move to three-under.
The 24-year-old birdied the 16th, then parred the next three holes. Lee moved to six-under with birdies on the second and sixth, but he tripped to a bogey on the ninth to end one back.
NOTES: Roque was the medalist at the California Qualifying event in May...Taylor, a tour rookie, is a former No. 1 amateur in the world.
