Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
He's hitting .312 with 32 runs scored, 11 home runs and 37 runs batted yet he is never talked about, written about (until now) or started in most fantasy leagues. He is Minnesota outfielder/DH Jason Kubel.
As any fantasy owner can tell you, Minnesota is the home of the best fantasy catcher in the major leagues - Joe Mauer, and one of the top first basemen in Justin Morneau. They get all the publicity, the headlines and the accolades. But they aren't the only fantasy players hiding in the "Land of the 10,000 Lakes."
Kubel has been consistent all season long. He's batting .312 outdoors and .313 indoors. He's hitting .301 during the day and .318 at night. Kubel hit .303 in April, .329 in May and is hitting .295 in June, but with more power than in either of the previous months.
And the best news to all fantasy owners is that this outfielder is yours for the asking in about 50% of all leagues. That's right, he's available as a free agent pickup.
Last year, Kubel hit 20 HRs and knocked in 78 runs, his best season in the majors. It should be noted that in each of his last four seasons, he's improved his runs, HRs and RBI totals, so this year's surge shouldn't be so unexpected. yet here it is, June 17th and he's still unknown by most fantasy owners.
But he won't stay that way if he keeps hitting like he is now. He's homered in four of the last seven games and batting right behind Mauer and Morneau is likely to continue to get multiple opportunities to drive in runs.
