Harper out as Stephen F. Austin football coach

Nacogdoches, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen F. Austin State University fired head football coach J.C. Harper on Monday, two days after the Lumberjacks finished 3-9 in his seventh season.

"Coach Harper and I met this morning at which time I shared with him my decision to make a change in our football leadership," athletic director Robert Hill said in announcing a national search for a successor. "I want to thank him for his service to SFA and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Harper had a 37-45 overall record at Stephen F. Austin. This season, the Lumberjacks shared last place in the Southland Conference with Nicholls, going 1-6 against their rivals.

SFA went 0-11 in Harper's first season in 2007, but the Lumberjacks turned their program around to win Southland championships in 2009 and 2010. Both squads qualified for the FCS playoffs.

In '09, Harper was named the Southland coach of the year and finished second in the Eddie Robinson Award voting for FCS coach of the year.

Harper spent two seasons as SFA's defensive coordinator before becoming its head coach. He has built some of the more explosive offenses in the nation despite spending much of his career on the defensive side of the ball. Lumberjacks quarterback Jeremy Moses won the 2010 Walter Payton Award as the outstanding player in the FCS.
