Southern Utah upsets No. 1 Eastern Washington

Cedar City, UT (Sports Network) - Southern Utah may not have shut down the high-powered Eastern Washington offense, but the Thunderbirds made plays when it counted to take down the No. 1-ranked Eagles, 30-27, on Saturday.

Place-kicker Colton Cook nailed a game-winning 36-yard field goal with three seconds left in the Big Sky Conference game. The Thunderbirds scored the game's final 10 points.

SUU senior quarterback Brad Sorensen completed 33-of-43 passes for 392 yards and a 21-yard touchdown strike to Fatu Moala with 7:01 left to tie the game at 27. Moala caught 10 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown in the win.

Eastern Washington totaled 495 yards - only 91 yards came on the ground - and quarterbacks Kyle Padron and Vernon Adams combined to complete 35-of-50 passes for 404 yards and two touchdowns. Junior receiver Brandon Kaufman caught 10 passes for 192 yards - both career highs.

However, the Eagles turned the ball over three times and were just 3-of-11 on third down conversions.

Southern Utah improved to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Sky. EWU fell to 7-2 and 5-1, surrendering first place in the conference.
