N.C. Central coach on paid leave after arrest

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - North Carolina Central University has placed football coach Henry Frazier III on paid leave following his arrest earlier this week on a charge that he assaulted his wife.

After putting Frazier on leave, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference university issued the following statement: "Henry Frazier III currently serves as head football coach of North Carolina Central University. The university has been informed of the alleged incident involving Mr. Frazier and his subsequent arrest.

"NCCU does not condone any action or activities of students, faculty and staff that violate city, county, state or federal laws. The university's expectation of high ethical standards applies to our entire campus community. As this is a legal matter, the jurisdictions involved will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident."

Frazier, 44, was arrested in Morrisville early Monday shortly after police responded to a call from his home. His wife, Lanier Turner-Frazier, told police the couple was arguing when Frazier grabbed her and left marks on her upper arms, and pushed her face, breaking her glasses.

Frazier left the home before officers arrived, but his car was stopped near the house and he was arrested.

He was released from the Wake County Jail later that day on $1,500 bond and ordered to appear in court on June 22.

Frazier formerly was head coach at Prairie View A&M, where in 2009 he was the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award, which honors the outstanding coach in the Football Championship Subdivision.

He left Prairie View after seven seasons for North Carolina Central, where last year the Eagles finished 2-9 in his first season.
