Richardson out as Southern football coach
Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Southern University head football coach Pete Richardson, who helmed the team for the past 17 seasons, was relieved of his duties on Monday.
Richardson was let go with one year left on his existing contract. He racked up a 134-62 record overall, winning five Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and four black college national championships.
The Jaguars went 6-5 in 2009 with a 3-4 mark in the SWAC, including a 31-13 setback to perennial rival Grambling.
Damon Nivens, who served as offensive line coach, was named head coach on an interim basis.
