Indiana State names Trent Miles new football coach

Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) - Indiana State University has named Trent Miles its new head football coach, school athletic director Ron Prettyman announced Tuesday.

Miles has spent his last three seasons as the running backs coach at the University of Washington, but is a Terre Haute native and a 1987 Indiana State graduate, having played for the Sycamores as a wide receiver from 1982 to 1986.

Prior to following UW head coach Tyrone Willingham to Seattle, Miles was a member of Willingham's staff at Notre Dame, where he spent three years as wide receivers coach. Among those Miles coached at ND were current pros Maurice Stovall, Rhema McKnight and Arnaz Battle, plus Jeff Samardzija, now a pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Miles' resume also includes stints as an assistant at Stanford, Fresno State, Hawaii, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma and New Mexico, as well as a season with the Green Bay Packers. But he returns to ISU, where he began his climb up the coaching ladder as a graduate assistant in 1987.

The Sycamores are coming off an 0-11 season, 0-6 in the Gateway Conference, after firing former head coach Lou West just four games into the 2007 campaign. ISU went just 1-25 in West's two-plus seasons, and finished the recently completed season with Dennis Raetz at the helm on an interim basis.
