Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Vince Young rushed for 158 yards and four
touchdowns, and also passed for 142 yards and a score, leading No. 8 Texas to
a 51-21 road victory over Big 12 rival Texas Tech.
Young was 10-of-15 passing and rushed 25 times for the Longhorns (6-1, 3-1 Big
12), who have won two straight since their 12-0 loss to Oklahoma two weeks
ago. Cedric Benson added 168 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.
Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie completed 34 of his 51 passes for 403
yards and a score in the loss. Cumbie and Taurean Henderson scored rushing
touchdowns, but the Red Raiders (4-3, 2-2) finished with negative-17 yards on
Texas Tech scored first, driving 86 yards for a touchdown on their second
possession of the game. Henderson's two-yard touchdown run with 7:25 left in
the opening quarter was set up by Nehemiah Glover's 58-yard reception on
second down from the Texas Tech 39.
But Texas responded with an 80-yard scoring drive, tying the game at 7-7 on
Young's two-yard dive with 2:49 remaining in the first. The 11-play drive
featured four plays longer than 10 yards -- two Young rushes and two Young
Longhorns linebacker Aurmon Satchell intercepted Cumbie on the ensuing Texas
Tech possession, returning the pick 26 yards to the Raiders' 25 and setting up
another two-yard TD run by Young that made it 14-7.
Tech responded with a 71-yard scoring drive that bridged the first and second
quarters, tying the game at 14-14 with 10:00 remaining in the half on Cumbie's
one-yard TD dive.
But the back-and-forth scoring continued at the other end with Young's nine-
yard touchdown pass to David Thomas, which made it 21-14 with 7:00 left before
Texas kicker David Pino missed a 50-yard field goal try wide-right later in
the second quarter, but Dusty Mangum was good on a 27-yarder at the end of the
half to give the Longhorns a 24-14 lead.
Young had touchdown runs of one yard and 11 yards in the first seven minutes
of the third quarter, extending the Longhorns' lead to a commanding 38-14.
Mangum then kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first minute of the fourth to
make it 41-14.
Five minutes after that, Texas went ahead 48-14 on Benson's one-yard touchdown
run. The Longhorns needed just eight plays and 36 yards for the score after
Texas Tech failed on a fourth down attempt.
The Red Raiders responded with a 77-yard scoring drive and pulled within 48-21
on Cumbie's 11-yard touchdown pass to Trey Haverty with 7:23 remaining.
Texas got a 44-yard field goal from Richmond McGee for its final points.
Glover led all receivers with 166 yards on 11 catches...Haverty finished with
eight receptions for 98 yards...Texas Tech was coming off a bye after
trouncing Nebraska 70-10 two weeks ago. The Red Raiders also scored 70 points
in its first home game, whipping TCU 70-35 on September 18th...Texas holds a
39-18 lead in the all-time series with Tech.
