Manhattan, KS (Sports Network) - Darren Sproles ran for 221 yards and a
touchdown on 42 carries to lead 12th-ranked Kansas State to a 27-13 win over
Western Kentucky in the season opener for both teams at KSU Stadium
Dylan Meier ran for a touchdown and threw for 183 yards on 12-of-18 attempts
for the defending Big 12 champion Wildcats (1-0), who tied a school record
with their 15th straight victory in the home opener.
Lerron Moore ran for 63 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the
Hilltoppers (0-1), who have made four straight appearances in the I-AA
playoffs. Justin Haddix completed 10-of-18 passes for 182 yards and touchdown.
Maurice Perkins caught five passes for a game-high 126 yards.
Kansas State reeled off 13 straight points to extend a 7-6 second-quarter
Joe Rheem kicked a 22-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter
to put the team ahead 10-6 at halftime. The offense moved the ball to Western
Kentucky's one-yard line with less than a minute remaining in the second, but
had to settle for three points after a false start penalty.
Less than five minutes in the third quarter, Sproles ran 33 yards for a
touchdown to open a 17-6 advantage for Kansas State. The team converted two
third downs on the series, which covered 10 plays and 80 yards.
Rheem kicked a 19-yard field goal with 4:14 remaining in the third to open a
20-6 edge for the Wildcats.
Earl Clayton caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Haddix with 12 seconds to
go in the quarter to get the Hilltoppers within 20-13
Allen Webb capped the scoring for the Wildcats on an eight-yard touchdown run
with 6:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Meier's nine-yard touchdown run capped the game's initial drive and put Kansas
State ahead 7-0. A 10-yard run on third down by Sproles extended the 15-play,
80-yard drive which ended with six minutes left in the first quarter.
Western Kentucky pulled within 7-6 on a 13-yard touchdown run by Moore 4:20
into the second quarter. Montaze Trumbo's 13-yard catch on third-and-nine set
up the score.
Yamon Figurs pulled in five passes for 84 yards for Kansas State, which
improved to 3-0 in the all-time series and has won 40 of its last 41 regular
season games against non-conference opponents...Western Kentucky lost for the
third time in its last nine season openers...The Wildcats improved to 44-3 in
non-conference home games under head coach Bill Snyder.
