Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - John Randle rushed for 105 yards and one score
on 20 carries to lead the Kansas Jayhawks to a narrow 31-28 victory over the
Kansas State Wildcats in a Big-12 conference battle.
Adam Barmann completed 10-of-20 pass attempts for just 85 yards and two scores
for Kansas (3-3, 1-2 Big 12). Jason Swanson, who replaced Barmann in the
third quarter, completed 4-of-7 pass attempts for 52 yards and one score in
the contest. Randle also caught five passes for 51 yards and one touchdown in
Dylan Meier completed 15-of-24 pass attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns
for Kansas State (2-3, 0-2). Versatile running back Darren Sproles, who came
into the weekend sixth in the nation in rushing with 152.8 ypg, was held to
just 73 yards on 24 carries in the loss. Tony Madison caught four passes for
114 yards and one score in the contest.
Barmann hit Lyonel Anderson with a two-yard touchdown pass late in the opening
frame to put the Jayhawks up 7-0.
Field goals of 49 and 37 yards by Joe Rheem cut the Wildcats deficit to 7-6 at
Johnny Beck's 20-yard field goal early in the third frame put Kansas up 10-6.
The Jayhawks extended their lead to 17-6 when Randle scampered into the
end zone from 20-yards out midway through the third quarter.
A two-yard run by Meier along with a successful two-point conversion run by
Sproles brought the Wildcats within three points late in the quarter.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the contest at 21-17 when Meier hit
Madison with a long 86-yard touchdown pass.
Kansas regained the lead at 24-21 when Swanson hit Mark Simons with a 31-yard
scoring strike early in the fourth quarter.
The Jayhawks extended their lead to 31-21 late in the final frame when Randle
scampered into the end zone from 43-yards out.
The Wildcats cut the score to 31-28 when Meier hit Brian Casey with an eight-
yard touchdown pass, but despite the touchdown, Kansas State was downed by
The Jayhawks, who gained 365 yards in the contest and held the Wildcats to a
meager 238 yards on the night. snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series.
