Manhattan, KS (Sports Network) - Collin Klein's one-yard score in the fourth
overtime gave No. 17 Kansas State a thrilling 53-50 win over Texas A&M in a
Big 12 battle at Bill Snyder Stadium.
Klein had a huge day under center as he ran 35 times for 103 yards and five
scores while he passed for 281 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-27 passing with
an interception for the Wildcats (8-2, 5-2 Big 12), who had dropped their
previous two games.
"We have great leadership and good coaches that put us in positions to
succeed," Klein said. "Texas A&M threw a lot at us and did some really crazy
things we were not expecting. Being able to handle it really helped us in the
Ryan Tannehill was 27-for-46 with three touchdowns, one interception and 210
yards while Cyrus Gray had 30 carries for 218 yards and two scores for the
Aggies (5-5, 3-4), who have dropped their past three games.
The fourth overtime saw Texas A&M start with the ball, but the team stalled
and a 20-yard field goal put them up, 50-47.
Three consecutive rushes moved the chains for the Wildcats before a pass
interference call near the end zone resulted in a 1st-and-goal at the two.
Klein was stuffed for a one-yard gain on the next play, but then broke the
plane on the next for the win.
"It was a really tough loss," said Tannehill. "I think this was a game of lost
opportunities. We had a lot of chances in regulation and in overtime...and we
didn't make it happen. That's part of why it's so hard to swallow."
The Aggies held a 21-14 lead going into the fourth, but Klein's two-yard score
tied the game less than a minute in.
After a Texas A&M punt, John Hubert fumbled a carry and the Aggies recovered
at the Kansas State 29. Three plays later, Gray punched it in from seven yards
out for a 28-21 lead.
The Aggies later got a 17-yard field goal from Randy Bullock to take a 31-21
advantage with 6 1/2 minutes to play, but Klein found Chris Harper on a 53-
yard score to make it a one-score game less than a minute later.
Following a quick three-and-out from the Aggies, the Wildcats got into scoring
position thanks to a pass interference call and a face mask penalty from the
Aggies. Anthony Cantele booted a 44-yard field goal with a little over two
minutes left and Texas A&M was unable to score as the game went to overtime.
Klein fumbled the ball near the goalline on the Wildcats first OT possession,
but Tramine Thompson recovered it in the end zone. Tannehill countered with a
nine-yard score to Jeff Fuller.
Bullock and Cantele exchanged field goals of 42 and 38 yards, respectively, in
the second overtime.
Klein took the ball on the first play of the third OT around the left side and
into the end zone for a 25-yard score, but Tannehill hit Uzoma Nwachukwu from
eight yards away on fourth down in the third OT. Both teams failed on their
two-point conversion tries to force the fourth overtime.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Aggies were able to take the lead on a
drive that wrapped through the first and second quarters with Tannehill
hitting Ryan Swope in the end zone on a six-yard score.
The Aggies then recovered a Wildcats fumble and Jameill Showers turned that
into a three-yard score for a 14-0 lead with 11:24 to play in the second.
The Wildcats finally got on the board with a nine-play, 33-yard drive that was
capped on a Klein two-yard score. The touchdown resulted from Nigel Malone
picking off a Tannehill pass.
After holding Texas A&M, Kansas State got the ball back at its own 30 and was
able to get into scoring position on catches from Thompson and Travis
Tannahill that went for 23 and 34 yards, respectively. Klein capped the drive
and tied the game with a three-yard score with less than a minute to play in
the first half.
The only score of the third went to Texas A&M as Gray's 10-yard score was
preceded by Terrence Frederick's interception of Klein.
