NCAA Game Summary - Tulsa at East Carolina

Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Dominique Davis and Justin Jones connected
for a touchdown on the last play of the game as East Carolina outslugged
Tulsa, 51-49, in the season opener for both squads.
Davis went 27-for-46 with 383 yards, five touchdowns and an interception and
added a rushing touchdown for the Pirates (1-0, 1-0 C-USA), who have won back-
to-back league titles. Dwayne Harris had seven catches for 121 yards and two
scores while Lance Lewis added six catches for 105 yards and two scores.
G.J. Kinne went 28-for-43 with 399 yards, five touchdowns and an interception
for the Golden Hurricane (0-1, 0-1 C-USA), who fell to 5-5 all-time against
East Carolina. Charles Clay had eight catches for 86 yards and a score in the
loss.
Trailing by four points with just over a minute to play, Davis drove his team
down the field and connected with Jones on a 33-yard strike on the final play
of the game for the win.
The game was a see-saw contest throughout the first three quarters and the
story didn't change in the final 15 minutes.
Trailing by five points, East Carolina went ahead on a two-yard touchdown run
from Davis for a 31-29 lead 1 1/2 minutes into the final quarter, but Tulsa
answered 29 seconds later on a 75-yard touchdown catch by Willie Carter and a
successful two-point conversion to make it a 35-31 game.
Davis answered that score with a six-yard toss to Harris, but Kinne responded
with an 11-yard toss to Trae Johnson for a 42-38 lead with 8:15 to play.
Just over two minutes later, the Pirates went back on top as Davis tossed a
34-yard touchdown to Harris for a 45-42 lead with 6:05 to play.
The Golden Hurricane, though, grabbed the lead back with 1:22 to play as Kinne
and Clay got together for a three-yard score for a 49-45 advantage.
The Pirates got on the board first as Jonathan Williams carried the ball to
paydirt from 37 yards out for a 7-0 lead just over 3 1/2 minutes into the
contest.
Tulsa answered later in the quarter as Alex Singleton punched the ball into
the end zone from a yard out with 5 1/2 minutes left in the frame.
A 39-yard field goal from Michael Barbour gave East Carolina a 10-7 lead after
15 minutes of play.
The Golden Hurricane had a Kevin Fitzpatrick field goal attempt blocked early
in the second, but the team took the lead later in the frame on a Damaris
Johnson 31-yard touchdown run. The team opted for a two-point conversion
attempt, but it failed and it was a 13-10 contest.
The Pirates, though, answered on their ensuing possession as a nine-play, 64-
yard drive was capped on a 30-yard touchdown catch by Lewis from Davis for a
17-13 lead with 4:30 left in the second.
Tulsa made it a one-point game before the end of the half as Fitzpatrick
connected on a 22-yard field goal.
In the third quarter, Tulsa went ahead when Kinne and Clay Sears hooked up on
a 12-yard touchdown for a 23-17 advantage with eight minutes left in period.
The Pirates, though, answered just over a minute later when Davis and Lewis
connected for a 43-yard touchdown and a 24-23 lead.
The Golden Hurricane again went in front on its next touch as Kinne and Jameel
Owens got together for a three-yard touchdown with 3:26 to play in the third.
It was a 29-24 game after the two-point conversion failed.
