Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 264 yards and
three touchdowns as the Miners of Texas-El Paso posted a 38-20 win over the
New Mexico Lobos in non-conference play at University Stadium.
Vittatoe converted 20-of-37 passes as the Miners (4-1) won their third
straight on the season. Kris Adams caught five passes for 141 yards and two
scores, while Joe Banyard posted 90 yards and a TD on 15 carries.
The Lobos (0-5) struggled to establish their offense as quarterbacks Brad
Gruner and Tarean Austin combined to hit 18-of-32 passes for 139 yards and a
couple of interceptions.
New Mexico scored the first points of the contest when Austin hit the end zone
on a four-yard run, less than three minutes into the meeting.
UTEP answered back with a couple of touchdowns of its own as Vittatoe hit
Adams with a 49-yard TD strike and Banyard posted a 10-yard TD run to make the
score 14-7 in favor of the visitors.
At the 3:32 mark of the first frame, Anthony Hooks gave the Lobos life with a
blocked field goal attempt returned 45 yards for the score.
However, UTEP took control from there and rattled off 24 straight points,
beginning with a 44-yard field goal by Dakota Warren and followed by a 12-yard
TD catch by Evan Davis from Vittatoe to give the Miners a 24-14 edge at the
Adams and Vittatoe combined on a 48-yard TD pass play in the third for the
Miners, while Leilyon Myers posted a one-yard TD run to push the advantage to
38-14 with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff Myles Daughtry caught the ball at the goal line and
raced up the middle and eluded tacklers down the sidelines to reach the end
zone, but after a failed two-point conversion the Lobos were left with the 18-
