El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 246 yards and five
touchdowns as the Miners of Texas-El Paso easily defeated the New Mexico State
Aggies, 42-10, in non-conference action at the Sun Bowl.
Vittatoe converted 19-of-30 passes on the night for the Miners (2-1) as they
increased their advantage in the all-time series to 51-35-2 versus New Mexico
State (0-2) which lost for the ninth straight time dating back to the middle
of last season.
The Aggies were paced by Matt Christian who hit on 21-of-40 passes for 200
yards, while Seth Smith recorded a team-best 46 yards and a score on 10
UTEP opened with three straight touchdowns as Vittatoe hit Julio Lopez and
Donavon Kemp with scoring strikes of 18 and eight yards, respectively, while
Joe Banyard hit the end zone on a three-yard run to give the home team a 21-0
lead with just three minutes gone in the second frame.
NMSU's only points of the night came on a three-yard TD run by Smith midway
through the second period and a 31-yard field goal by Tyler Stampler to make
the score 21-10 at the break.
The Miners closed out the meeting the same way it began as Vittatoe hit Evan
Davis with a 16-yard TD pass early in the third quarter and then found Kris
Adams with scoring strikes of 68 and 11 yards later in the stanza to give the
hosts a commanding 32-point win.
New Mexico State, which registered just 96 yards on the ground, was held to a
mere 296 yards of total offense while UTEP posted 495 yards.
