Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Florida International rushed for 235 yards and
four scores, as the Golden Panthers defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers,
28-21, in a Sun Belt Conference tussle at FIU Stadium.
Darrian Mallary scored one of the four touchdowns for FIU (1-4, 1-0 SunBelt),
and led the ground game with 97 yards. Darriet Perry, who also scored,
finished with 64 yards in the win. Wes Carroll completed 12-of-19 passes for
108 yards, and scored a rushing touchdown as well.
Kawaun Jakes threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns for WKU (0-5, 0-1), and
also scored a rushing TD in the setback. It was the 25th straight loss for
Western Kentucky, which is the longest current streak in the nation.
The Golden Panthers clawed their way to an early 7-0 lead when T.Y. Hilton
scored on a 12-yard run.
FIU pushed its lead to 14-0 as Mallary's five-yard touchdown scamper capped
off a 10-play, 97-yard that took less than four minutes.
A four-yard touchdown run by Perry pushed Florida International's lead to 21-0
midway through the second quarter.
The Hilltoppers finally got on the scoreboard late in the first half when
Jakes connected with Jack Doyle for a six-yard touchdown pass.
Western Kentucky cut its deficit to 21-14 late in the third quarter when Jakes
plunged into the end zone from the one-yard line.
The Golden Panthers pushed their lead back to 14 points when Carroll found the
end zone on a one-yard run early in the final stanza.
With just under six minutes remaining in regulation, Jakes hooked up with
Dexter Haynes for a 53-yard touchdown pass. However, the Hilltoppers were
unable to even the score and eventually fell by a seven-point margin.
