NCAA Game Summary - Baylor at Texas

(Saturday, October 30th)

Final Score: (25) Baylor 30, Texas 22

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Robert Griffin III threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score, as the 25th-ranked Baylor Bears held off the Texas Longhorns, 30-22, in Big 12 action.

Griffin completed 16-of-24 passes for 219 yards and an interception for the Bears (7-2, 4-1 Big 12), who beat Texas for the first time since a 23-21 victory on November 1, 1997.

Jay Finley carried the ball 15 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Terrance Williams and Kendall Wright each caught a TD pass for Baylor, which cracked the top-25 poll this week for the first time since September 5, 1993 (No. 24).

Garrett Gilbert connected on 22-of-39 passes for 231 yards and an interception for the Longhorns (4-4, 2-3), who have lost two in a row and four of five overall. Gilbert also carried the ball eight times for 79 yards and score.

Texas had posted at least 10 wins in each of the last nine seasons, becoming just the second team in college football history to do so. That streak has officially come to a halt with Saturday's defeat.

Trailing 19-10 in the third quarter, Baylor ripped off 20 unanswered points to take the lead. Texas was about to add to its lead, but Justin Tucker missed a 48-yard field goal. On the first play of the ensuing Bears drive, Finley scampered 69 yards into the end zone to cut the gap to 19-17 with just under 4 1/2 minutes remaining.

Antonio Johnson then picked off Gilbert and returned the ball 20 yards to the Texas 11. Griffin capped a seven-play drive with a sneak on the first play of the fourth period. A failed two-point conversion left Baylor ahead by four, 23-19.

The Bears put together a seven-play, 85-yard march on their next possession. On 3rd-and-9 from the Longhorns 30, Wright caught a TD pass from Griffin to make it a 30-19 game with 8 1/2 minutes to play.

Tucker's 21-yard field goal cut the deficit to 30-22 with 3:40 to go. Baylor went three-and-out on offense, and Texas took over at its own eight with 2:34 left. The Longhorns actually fumbled the punt, but recovered the football.

Texas got no further than its 23-yard line, and the Bears ran out the rest of the clock.

Baylor's first possession of the game resulted in Griffin fumbling the football. Texas' Sam Acho recovered the ball at the 39-yard line of the Bears. That led to a 26-yard Tucker field goal.

Aaron Jones responded with a 24-yard field goal on the ensuing Baylor possession to make it a 3-3 game with over 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Bears were forced to punt the ball early in the second quarter. The Longhorns lost control of the football multiple times on the return. They got the ball back each time, with the last time being in their own end zone. Baylor thought it was a safety, but it was ruled a touchback following review.

Texas put together a 12-play drive that Tucker capped with a 31-yarder. He made a 49-yard field goal on the next Longhorns possession to make it a 9-3 game with 4:13 left.

Faced with a 3rd-and-10, Griffin hit Williams on a slant near midfield. Williams broke a tackle before sprinting 59 yards for a touchdown and 10-9 Baylor lead with 43 seconds remaining before intermission.

Tucker made a 40-yarder right before the half to give Texas a 12-10 edge.

The Longhorns opened the second half with a nine-play, 80-yard drive. Gilbert capped the march with a 20-yard TD run for a 19-10 advantage.
