Fort Lauderdale, FL (Sports Network) - Dwight Dasher's 74-yard touchdown run
with 5:31 remaining made the difference, as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
topped the Florida Atlantic Owls, 27-20, in a Sun Belt Conference battle at
Dasher threw for just 90 yards on 7-of-21 tosses, but he had 108 yards on the
ground, helping MT (5-3, 3-1 SBC) win its second game in a row. D.D. Kyles
also had a strong performance, as he rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on
Rusty Smith led the way for FAU (2-5, 2-2), completing 23-of-45 pass attempts
for 304 yards, with two touchdowns against two picks. He, however, left the
game with five minutes left due to an injured shoulder.
The Owls scored the first points of the game with a 38-yard field goal by Ross
Gornall midway through the opening quarter. FAU added to its lead late in the
frame, as Smith threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Avery Holley.
MT's special teams then stepped in and Sherman Neal returned a blocked punt 29
yards to paydirt.
Alan Gendreau knotted the score on a 46-yard field goal for the Raiders early
in the second quarter.
FAU regained the lead midway through the second period, as Cortez Gent pulled
in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Smith.
On the last play of the first half, Gendreau connected on a 23-yard field goal
for the Raiders.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Gornall extended FAU's lead to 20-13 with
a 42-yard field goal just seconds into the final period.
MT answered just over a minute later, as Kyles scored on an eight-yard run.
The Raiders would then go ahead for good, when Dasher scampered 74 yards for a
score with 5:31 left to play.
The Owls piled up 478 yards of total offense and possessed the ball for nearly
40 minutes, but committed two turnovers and failed to convert on three of its
five fourth-down chances.
