Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Brett Hodges threw for 230 yards and two
touchdowns, as the UCF Knights notched a 34-27 win over the UAB Blazers in a
Conference USA tilt at Legion Field.
Brynn Harvey carried 24 times for 130 yards for the Knights (8-4, 6-2 C-USA),
who won for the fifth time in their last six games. Harvey eclipsed 1,000
yards for the season and scored his 14th touchdown in the third quarter.
Joe Webb had 459 total yards and four TDs for the Blazers (5-7, 4-4), who
needed a win today to become bowl eligible. Webb threw for 322 yards and three
touchdowns, while also rushing for a game-high 137 yards and a score.
UCF found the end zone on its opening drive, as Hodges connected with Kamar
Aiken for a 12-yard touchdown pass to give the Knights a 7-0 lead with 10:30
to play in the first quarter.
Two minutes later, the Blazers answered, as Webb hooked up with Patrick Hearn
for a 23-yard scoring strike to knot the score at 7-7.
UCF took a 10-7 lead on Nick Cattoi's 27-yard field goal at the 2:25 mark of
the opening quarter.
The Knights extended their lead to 17-7 early in the second quarter, when
Hodges found Billy Giovanetti for a five-yard score.
The Blazers answered with another quick strike, as Webb burst through the UCF
defense for a 53-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 10:06 to
play until halftime.
But UCF continued to front-run, and Jonathan Davis pushed the lead to 24-14 on
a seven-yard touchdown run with 5:12 remaining in the second quarter.
UCF extended its lead to 31-14 at the 9:25 mark of the third quarter, when
Harvey broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown scamper.
UAB made it a 10-point game on Webb's 34-yard touchdown pass to Jeffery
Anderson with 14:03 to play in the fourth quarter.
UCF answered with a 36-yard field goal from Cattoi to push the margin to 34-21
with 11:55 remaining.
The Blazers trimmed the deficit to 34-27 on Webb's five-yard scoring strike to
Frantrell Forrest with 2:49 to play. UAB retained possession at its own 11
with 1:06 to play, but the drive stalled at the UCF 39 when Webb couldn't
connect with Forrest on a 4th-and-9 with 11 seconds on the clock.
UAB lost despite a 527-435 edge in total offense for the game.
