Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Kyle Padron threw two touchdown passes and
scored twice on the ground to lead his SMU Mustangs to a 35-31 victory over
the Texas-El Paso Miners in a Conference USA clash.
Emmanuel Sanders made seven catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns for SMU
(6-4, 5-1 C-USA).
Donald Buckram rushed for 241 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries for Texas-El
Paso (3-7, 2-4), which got 396 passing yards from Trevor Vittatoe.
Trailing 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter, Padron scored on a one-yard
touchdown run to give SMU a 28-24 advantage.
UTEP answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Vittatoe to Buckram with 8:57
left in the contest, enabling the Miners to grab a 31-28 edge.
The lead changed hands once again with 4:34 remaining, as Padron threw a 37-
yard touchdown pass to Sanders to give the Mustangs a 35-31 advantage and the
SMU opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 35-yard touchdown pass from
Padron to Sanders.
UTEP tied the score at 7-7 with just under three minutes left in the opening
frame, as Buckram reached the end zone on a 14-yard scamper.
The Mustangs regained control in the second quarter, as back-to-back
touchdowns enabled the club to grab a 21-7 advantage. After a 58-yard scoring
run by Shawnbrey McNeal, Padron plunged into the end zone from one yard out.
With 1:33 remaining in the first half, UTEP cut its deficit to 21-10 with a
33-yard field goal by Logan Barrett.
The Miners dominated play in the third quarter, as they posted a pair of
touchdowns to grab a 24-21 lead. Jason Williams had a one-yard scoring run,
and Vittatoe tossed a 22-yard touchdown strike to Jeff Moturi.
