NCAA Game Summary - Texas-El Paso at Rice

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Charles Ross scored on a one-yard run with 7:45 left in the game to give the Rice Owls a 30-29 win over the Texas-El Paso Miners in Conference USA action.

Ross scored three touchdowns, two of them in the fourth quarter, as the Owls (2-9, 2-5 C-USA) overcame a 29-17 fourth-quarter deficit. Tyler Smith accumulated 127 rushing yards and a touchdown for Rice.

Donald Buckram ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns for the Miners (3-8, 1-5). Trevor Vittatoe was 17-of-26 through the air for 244 yards and a touchdown, but UTEP lost five fumbles and turned the ball over six times.

The Miners took a 13-0 first-quarter lead when Buckram scored on runs of seven and three yards, respectively.

Ross got the Owls on the scoreboard at the 13:22 mark of the second quarter when he scored on a one-yard run.

Clark Fangmeier's 27-yard field goal at the 11:20 mark brought Rice to within three points at 13-10.

Buckram, though, scored on a three-yard run with 6:41 left in the half to give UTEP a 20-10 halftime lead.

The Owls drew to within three points at the 9:51 mark of the third period when Smith scored on a 12-yard burst.

Logan Barrett's 29-yard field goal at the 3:31 mark extended the Miner lead to 23-17 after three quarters.

Vittatoe found Donavon Kemp with a 40-yard throw with 12:04 left in the game to extended the Miners' lead to 12 points, but UTEP failed on what turned out to be a crucial two-point conversion attempt.

Ross scored from three yards out with 9:05 left in the game to cut the UTEP lead to 29-24. The Miners fumbled the ensuing kickoff, leading to Ross' game- winning score.

The Miners drove to the Rice 12-yard line on their next drive, but Buckram fumbled on the next play to kill the drive.

UTEP had the edge in total yards, 395-227.
