Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Curtis Steele ran for a whopping 240 yards
and scored two touchdowns to lead the Memphis Tigers to a 35-20 victory over
the Texas-El Paso Miners in a Conference USA showdown at Liberty Bowl Memorial
Trevor Vittatoe had an efficient day under center for Memphis (2-4, 1-2 C-
USA), completing 21-of-40 passes for 319 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while
Jeff Moturi caught five passes for 118 yards and a score in the Tiger win.
As for UTEP (2-4, 1-1), it was paced by Will Hudgens, who completed 19-of-33
passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Donald Buckram and Marlon McClure
shared the load on the ground for the Miners, gaining 58 and 52 yards,
respectively, in the losing effort.
A 38-yard field goal by Logan Barrett early in the opening period of play gave
the Miners a 3-0 lead.
But the Tigers rattled off 14 unanswered points to close the quarter with a
22-yard strike from Hudgens to Marcus Rucker and a six-yard toss from Hudgens
to Duke Calhoun.
The Miners added another Barrett field goal early in the second stanza, this
time from 36 yards out, to cut their deficit to 14-6.
But the Tigers extended their advantage to 21-6 with a two-yard touchdown pass
from Hudgens to Curtis Steele.
