El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for a school-record 517
yards and five touchdowns to lead the Texas-El Paso Miners to a 52-21 victory
over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference-USA tilt at the Sun Bowl.
The previous record was held by Bill Craigo, who threw for 507 yards against
Colorado State back in 1970.
Jeff Moturi hauled in seven receptions for 179 yards and one touchdown for
UTEP (4-8, 3-5 C-USA), while Kris Adams finished with 97 yards and one score
on five catches.
Brian Anderson led the way for Marshall (6-6, 4-4), throwing for 347 yards and
three touchdowns. Antavious Wilson caught one of those touchdown passes and
finished the game with 153 yards on nine receptions.
The Miners opened the scoring early in the first quarter when James Thomas
found the end zone on a four-yard run. However, Logan Barrett's extra point
was blocked, leaving the score at 6-0.
The Miners pushed their lead to 13-0 late in the opening frame when Donald
Buckram scampered into the end zone on a 12-yard run.
The Thundering Herd finally found the scoreboard early in the second stanza
when Anderson hit Aaron Dobson with a 34-yard scoring strike.
UTEP responded however, as Vittatoe connected with Tufick Shadrawy for a 23-
yard touchdown pass.
Marshall cut its deficit to six points late in the first half when Anderson
and Chuck Walker connected for a nine-yard touchdown toss.
UTEP extended its lead early in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown
pass from Vittatoe to Adams, which was followed by a two-point conversion
run by Vittatoe.
Midway through the frame Anderson connected with Wilson for a 50-yard
The Miners dominated the rest of the quarter however, as Vittatoe found Jonny
Moore for a two-yard touchdown pass, and then connected with Donavon Kemp for
a 13-yard scoring strike.
Less than two minutes into the final quarter Vittatoe connected with Moturi
for an 80-yard touchdown pass.
The final points of the game came off the foot of Barrett, who nailed a 28-
yard field goal, pushing UTEP's lead to 52-21.
