Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - San San Te connected on three field goals to
lead the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a 23-15 victory over the Florida
International Golden Panthers in a non-conference battle at Rutgers Stadium.
Joe Martinek led Rutgers (2-1) with 121 rushing yards on 5.3 yards per
attempt, while Tom Savage struggled under center, completing just 11-of-28
passes for 185 yards.
Paul McCall led FIU (0-2) with 197 passing yards and two touchdowns, but also
tossed two interceptions and was sacked three times. T.Y. Hilton also had a
big game, hauling in nine passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
Te opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a 39-yard field
Rutgers pushed its lead to 10-0 late in the second stanza with a two-yard
touchdown run by Domenic Natale, and went into the break up 13-0 thanks to
Te's second field goal which was a 27-yard attempt.
After a scoreless third quarter Te struck again, this time nailing a 27-yard
kick early in the final frame.
The Scarlet Knights pushed their advantage to 23-0 when Ryan D'Imperio
returned an interception 38 yards to pay dirt.
FIU tried to mount a comeback, as McCall connected with Hilton for an eight-
yard touchdown pass and a 14-yard scoring strike, but it was far too late for
the Golden Panthers, who eventually fell to Rutgers by an eight-point margin.
